ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The Birth Center/ Director of Midwifery (CNM) is responsible for the 24-hour operation of the Birth Center. The Director of Midwifery is responsible for clinical staff. The Director of Midwifery will assist the Administrator as needed.
The Director of Midwifery (CNM) is also responsible for the management of care of Birth Center and midwifery practice clients during the antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum phase, as well as neonates until 28 days of age; as well as providing women’s health and gynecological care.
Plans, organizes, directs, and evaluates all aspects of Birth Center functioning.
Supervises daily operation
Establishes and revises policies, practice agreements, procedures, and quality assurance program.
Hires, evaluates, and terminates staff.
Coordinates schedules for office staff, clinical office staff and on-call hours.
Meets with the Board of Directors, professionals, and office staff on a regularly scheduled basis.
Assist in the development of the annual budget and reviews profit/loss statements.
Plans and evaluates client care programs.
Develops and works toward achieving long term plans for the birth center.
Participates in direct client care activities in rotation with other CNM(s).
Participates in professional and community activities.
Represents the Birth Center in a professional manner to the community.
Continues professional development.
Participates in the clinical and / or didactic education of midwifery, nursing and medical students by providing in-services and new educational material periodically.

Essential Functions
The certified nurse midwife (CNM) is an advanced practice nurse who is responsible for the assessment, plan, implementation and evaluation of nurse midwifery care delivered to antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum, and newborn clients, as well as providing preventive care, reproductive care, and gynecological care. The CNM performs physical exams; collects and documents data; facilitates physiological labor, birth and emergency management; conducts diagnostic and therapeutic procedures; orders and schedules laboratory studies and professional consultations; and prescribes appropriate interventions and medications.
Participates in direct client care activities in rotation with other CNM(s)
Adheres to the birth center model of care and philosophy of physiological birth, trauma-informed care, and informed consent
Adheres to birth center eligibility criteria for clients throughout antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum care.
Provides comprehensive midwifery care and appropriate referrals
Provides competent and respectful care to all families regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, or disabilities
Participates in once-monthly drills/ in-service
Participates in professional and community awareness activities
Supervises the orientation and functioning of birth assistants
Responsible for delegated aspects of daily operation, including acting in absence of Director of Midwifery

All staff are responsible for the maintenance and care of the birth center which includes cleaning, sanitation, laundry, and equipment maintenance

We are free standing birth center in Burr Ridge Illinois providing full -scope midwifery care. We strive to be birth equity-focused and welcoming to all families.
1 full-time salaried position , 1 Part-time, and 1 PRN position available. Full time is two 8 hour clinic days per week in addition to two 24hr call days per week for birth assistant coverage. Call can be taken from home. PRN is six 12 hours shifts per month, call taken from home.
QUALIFICATIONS
Licensed as a Registered Nurse or Practical Nurse in the State of Illinois.
Experience in intrapartum, postpartum and neonatal care preferred
Current BLS and NRP

FUNCTION
The registered nurse (RN) Birth Assistant provides client care in the clinic for prenatal and office visits. The RN also provides care for the client and family during labor, birth and postpartum period at BRBC. The Birth Assistant may also participate in the provision of extended postpartum care, nurse visits, client education programs, community outreach, and center operations in collaboration with the Administrative and/or Director of Midwifery.

LINES OF RESPONSIBILITY
The Birth Center Director of Midwifery and Staff CNMs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The registered nurse (RN) Birth Assistant provides care for the client and family during labor, birth and postpartum period at BRBC.
The Birth Assistant may also participate in the provision of extended postpartum care, client education programs, community outreach, and center operations in collaboration with the Administrative and/or Director of Midwifery.
Intrapartum care
● Arrive at birth center within 60 minutes of being contacted by on-call CNM
● Participate in direct client care during intrapartum and postpartum
● Monitor vitals of laboring client
● Assist client with comfort positions, provide labor support
● Perform fetal heart rate monitoring through intermittent auscultation
● Administer medications and/or start IV as indicated
● Assist CNM with documentation of the laboring client and fetal assessments, progress and interventions
● Assist CNM with birth
● Assist CNM with obstetric emergency management including newborn resuscitation
● Accompany client or newborn to hospital in event of transfer
Immediate Postpartum Care
● Monitor vitals of client and newborn
● Ongoing assessment of uterus and lochia
● Assist with establishing breastfeeding
● Deliver cord blood and other specimens to designated lab if indicated
Postpartum Care until Discharge
● Ongoing assessment of postpartum client : lochia, voiding, oral hydration and nutrition, parenting adjustment, physical needs
● Ongoing assessment of newborn; Respiratory status, color, temperature, heart rate, neurological status, feeding, activity
Discharge
● Review discharge instructions
● Assist family in preparations for going home
● Schedule 24-48hr postpartum visit, and 2 week postpartum visit
● Terminal cleaning and restocking of birth room. This must be done before birth assistant leaves the Center.
Ongoing Postpartum Follow-Up
● Provide 12-24 hour postpartum phone visit and 24-72 hour postpartum home visit
Additional Responsibilities
● Participates in a quality assurance program
● Attends and participates in monthly meeting, training, and drills
ORIENTATION AND COMPETENCY PROGRAM
● Orientation of employees contracted as Birth Assistants will include assessment and documentation of competency in intrapartum, postpartum and neonatal nursing and labor support skills specified in the Birth Assistant Job
● The orientation program will include an initial self-assessment of required skills that will serve as the basis for determining the type and extent of in-service training required for the individual employee.
● After reviewing the employee’s orientaon self-assessment, the Director of Midwifery will make arrangements for the necessary in-service training. The Director of Midwifery will be assisted by the clinical staff of BRBC conducting and evaluating the in-service training. This training may include individual or group skills sessions and/or emergency drills, and the provision of direct client care under the supervision of a staff CNM or fully-trained Birth Assistant.
● Either relevant clinical experience in another setting or in-service training will be documented for all required clinical tasks.
● Once the Birth Assistant has completed the Birth Assistant Skills Self-Assessment and the Birth Assistant Orientation Checklist to the satisfaction of themself and the Director of Midwifery, they may function independently in accordance with their job description.
